3 1/4 hour Downtown Los Angeles Street Photowalk Workshop
Downtown LA Street Photography Session – 3:30 – 6:45pm
Meet at Union Square. There is a Starbucks inside just before the INFORMATION desk. It’s very easy to find. Meet at this Starbucks at 3:30pm.
Our themes for the day are Capturing Emotion and Environmental Portraiture
3:30 – 4pm.
In Street Photography, candid is essential. We’ll start with a discussion on pre-focusing (aka Zone-Focusing) as one way to increase discretion when capturing candid photographs of people in public.
4pm – 5:10pm
We’ll work through La Plaza at Olvera Street and surrounding area.
Work there for 1 hour and move on to our next location.
5:30 – 5:45 Discussion
20 minute walk to Grand Central Market. This is a (mostly) indoor location, and we’ll start with a brief technical tutorial/discussion about how to apply zone-focusing and our other sneaky techniques in lower light situations by increasing ISO and reducing shutter speed, etc.
Work there for 1 hour. End at 6:45pm.
Dinner and drinks at the Central Market if desired. Anyone desirous of image critique is encourage to present images over drinks.
As always, light tutorial is available for those who need it.
I recommend bringing a prime (fixed) lens instead of a zoom. Zoom lenses are great for travel and landscape images, but if you wish to improve your street photography skills, a prime lens is where it’s at.
I’ll have a wide angle lens and a “normal” lens with me.
Also, one IMPORTANT REQUEST:
Please disable your camera’s FOCUS notification BEEP. When attempting to shoot discreetly, it doesn’t work in your favor to alert your subject to your presence when your camera omits a loud beep every time it acquires focus. This is especially troublesome when working with a group of photographers, as your camera beeps can ruin shots for other shooters. Please be kind and disable your camera’s annoying burps and other functional noises.
This Photowalk is perfect for any street photographer looking to learn some new street photography techniques, improve their storytelling skills, and explore using unique compositions and backdrops to tell a more powerful visual narrative.
Bring your questions, your enthusiasm for street photography, and a sense of adventure.
I would advise you to consider discretion. If you’ve got a camera strap with a big NIKON logo on it for example, you will want to consider replacing it with a plain strap that doesn’t attract attention to the fact that you’re a photographer. We call this a “cowbell” accessory. No cowbells!
I shoot wide more often than not and will most likely be using a 35mm equivalent lens most of the day.
Please do reach out with any questions.
